“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see.
Now those troubles are going to have troubles with me!”
Dr Seuss
I am the Owner and Director of Pink Elephant Kids.
Why ‘Pink Elephant Kids’?
Well, try this… Don’t think of a pink elephant.
You can’t.
The first thing that pops in your mind is the pink elephant, and you gravitate towards that thought.
In order to make sense of what I said, you have to conjure up a pink elephant so you know exactly what it is that you aren’t supposed to do in order to make sense of the instruction.
That’s exactly what happens when you tell a child:
“Don’t argue with me”.
“Don’t answer back”.
“Don’t drop the glass”.
“Don’t fall”.
At Pink Elephant Kids, we detail how the mind works and how we can get it to work for us!!!
So, now… about me.
I have had about 8 lives already! And I’m still a young 45!
It started with my brothers murder at age 17, followed by my sister’s death at age 20 from Cystic Fibrosis, my boss committed suicide by hanging, my dad died from AML, my daughter was abused at day-care, my kids were systematically bullied through primary and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and Neurosarcoidosis… (they are not contagious).
There is more, but by now you will be thinking ‘this must be a joke’!
It isn’t, I assure you.
Anyway, there is a point I’m trying to make with this, and I don’t want to get side-tracked.
All those experiences, pressures and stressors (that just don’t stop no matter what else is going on in your life) gave me many opportunities. Opportunities to look at my life, my relationships, my choices and values and my self-awareness. It ensured I took the time to figure things out, to deal with the crap front on… to be hard core!
Not only did I learn (psychology degree, certifications & mastering neuro-linguistic programming, alongside other education), but those experiences also grounded me, provided me with true and genuine empathy. I may not understand everyone’s hurdles (you can’t until you have walked in another shoes), but at a very minimum, I understand the capacity that we all have as humans to continue on, even when we really think we can’t, sometimes even thrive.
I have a knack of making things happen, even if those things are sometimes seemingly impossible. I am driven by creative problem solving, empathy and the knowledge that often my ‘different’ perspective can be to the benefit of others in need.
I am acutely aware that people sometimes need help, navigating their emotions, being equipped to handle the world they are living in and feel supported and guided in times of desperation. I want to help them do that.
And who needs us more than children? Who to better help than children?
